              POWER TO THE PEOPLE

 

Some persons will tell you that the Bible is the word of GOD, but when one bible states “in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with GOD and the Word was God” and another states “in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with GOD and the Word was a GOD”, it is difficult for a thinking person to accept both as the word of GOD. The two statements above could be a topic for discussion but today I want to look at power.

The bible says “GOD is love” , but I do not agree. I believe that GOD is loving, but even if GOD was cruel he would still be “GOD” because he has the power. Power makes GOD “GOD”, not love. If the devil had the power he would be “GOD”, and we would have a different kind of “GOD.”

In a few weeks time the power that the people of Antigua and Barbuda took from the A.L.P. five years ago and gave to the U.P.P. will be returned to them, and because our political leaders know the value of power, they are doing everything possible to persuade the voters in Antigua and Barbuda, to give that power to them. If the people heed my advise they can keep the power, and use it in the way that they want it to be used, then they will not have to mumble and grumble for the next five years, as they have done for the past forty.

This can be done easily, but we must first free ourselves from the slavery of tradition, and that is the hard part because most persons in Antigua & Barbuda have formed such strong emotional attachments to certain beliefs that although a little rational reasoning would reveal how ridiculous those beliefs are, they are unable to recognize the obvious.

However I am going to try and try and if I die without succeeding I hope that one day my people will be able to free their minds from mental slavery.

This is how the people can keep the power to themselves and use it the way they want to.

At the present time no constituency chooses someone to represent them. They choose someone to represent a political party. That is why after an election you would hear that the U.P.P. won so many seats, and the A.L.P. won so many seats. I say each constituency should choose their own representative who will represent them and not a political party.

The people should have the power to decide at all times who they want to represent them therefore this representative should only hold this position as long as their constituents want them to.

The people should make the laws that govern them therefore no representative should introduce a bill to parliament before and unless their constituents have given their consent, and before a vote is taken in parliament each constituency should discuss and debate the proposed legislation. They should then instruct their representative how to vote. 

A representative should not have any other job. When they are not in parliament they should be in their constituency interacting with their constituents.

To facilitate this process each constituency should have it’s own low power fm radio station and it’s own website, where each constituent could have their own webpage.

Because the people should have the power to decide who they want to manage their affairs, government should operate the way the business community operates, with each department headed by a manager appointed by parliament, on the advise of the electorate The performance of these managers should be monitored by parliament, and the people kept informed. If the people are satisfied with their performance, there would be no need to remove them from office before retirement age. However if the people are not satisfied they could be removed at anytime.
